$20,000 Scholarship to study at Haverford College

APPLICATION DEADLINE: MARCH 18, 2005; Applications are being accepted for Fall 2005 semester only
Spend the fall semester 2005 at Haverford College, ranked by U.S. News and World Report as a top 10 liberal arts colleges in the United States. Haverford College, one of America's oldest colleges with only 1100 students, is located near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The park-like 216-acre campus includes more than 400 species of trees and shrubs, a nature walk, and a duck pond. Although students choose Haverford because of its academic excellence, students work together through arts and cultural activities, self-government and service programs, athletic programs, and day-to-day campus life.
This scholarship includes Haverford tuition and fees and on-campus housing (a $20,000 value). If desired, a part-time on-campus job at Haverford college for scholarship will be available for the scholarship winner. Winner must pay for own airfare costs, meals and comparable UH campus housing.

To be eligible for the Haverford College scholarship, the applicant must:
be a currently enrolled, full-time undergraduate student at UH Manoa with a declared major in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences;
have at least junior standing in fall 2005;
be a graduate of a Hawai`i high school;
be in strong academic standing at UH-Manoa (minimum 3.5 GPA)
have talent and potential in an arts and sciences discipline

To apply, each applicant must submit:
Cover sheet with applicant's name, current address, permanent address, telephone number, email address, social security number, Hawai`i high school attended, college major, and class standing (junior, senior)
Two letters of recommendation
Official transcripts of all university-level work
A 1000 word personal statement discussing your reasons for attending Haverford
Finalists must be available for interview.

Rodney P. Santos Scholarship Awards

Rodney P. Santos, retired educator and founding member and former President of the Colleges of Arts & Sciences Alumni Association (CASAA), established a scholarship fund to encourage undergraduate students in their pursuit of a liberal arts education. Up to five (5) students will receive cash awards of $1,000 each to assist them with their education expenses.
To be eligible for the Rodney P. Santos Scholarship, student must be eligible for the Rodney P. Santos scholarship, a student must be a graduate of a Hawai'i high school; be a full-time junior or senior at UH Manoa with a declared Arts & Sciences major; have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.5; have some degree of financial need; and have already received or intend to receive 50% of the undergraduate degree requirements from UH Manoa.

Harvard is offering free tuition for students that have a family income below $40,000.

Failure of Prestigious Universities to Enroll Low-Income Students March 1, 2005, Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said, "When only 10 percent of the students in Elite higher education come from families in lower half the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution." If you know of a family earning less than $40,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free...no tuition and no student loans!
